MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State, ranked 28th in this week’s National College Baseball Writers Association poll, completed a three-game sweep over Central Michigan University with a 5-1 win Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats (17-4 overall) pushed across three runs with two outs in the third inning to break open a scoreless game. Drew Biery broke the deadlock with an infield single that scored Rob Vaughn, while a pair of CMU errors allowed Kansas State to add two unearned runs later in the frame.
Kansas State added single runs in the fifth inning and eighth inning on an RBI groundout by Biery and a sacrifice fly by Justin Bloxom.
The Chippewas (7-10 overall) plated their only run in the sixth inning when Noah Lankford scored from third on Ben Humphrey’s two-out single.
Five CMU pitchers combined to limit the Wildcats to just four hits. Kansas State, however, took advantage of three CMU errors, drew five walks, had two batters hit by pitches and converted a trio of sacrifices.
The Chippewas managed just five hits, all singles. Five different players had one hit apiece.
Ben Hornbeck improved to 2-0 for KSU, allowing one run on five hits in 6-2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three. A.J. Morris and Daniel Edwards combined to toss three hitless innings and strike out five batters in relief.
Jeff Richard dropped to 0-2 for CMU. He gave up four runs, only two earned, on three hits in 4-2/3 innings.
CMU opens a five-game homestand with the home opener at Theunissen Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The Chippewas host Oakland on Tuesday at 3 p.m., IPFW on Wednesday at 3 p.m., then welcome Buffalo for a three-game Mid-American Conference series beginning on Friday.
