CLEVELAND, Ohio – Central Michigan University freshman Marko Spica (Belgrade, Serbia/School of Sport) has been named to the Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.
A 6-9 forward/center, Spica is averaging 7.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game heading into this week’s MAC Tournament. He has started 13 times and is one of only two Chippewas to score in every game this season.
The true freshman had nine double-figure scoring games during the regular season. He tallied career highs of 18 points and eight rebounds on two occasions — at Northern Illinois (1/13/07) and at Illinois-Chicago (217/07).
Joining Spica on the All-Freshman Team are Eastern Michigan’s Brandon Bowdy, Western Michigan’s David Kool, Kent State’s Rodriguez Sherman and Kent State’s Chris Singletary. Kool was named the league’s Freshman of the Year by the MAC News Media Association.
Spica and the Chippewas open MAC Tournament play on Wednesday, March 7. The No. 7-seeded Chippewas meet No. 10 Buffalo in Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. The winner will face No. 2 Akron on Thursday at 7 p.m.
NOTES:
• Spica is the 11th CMU freshman to be named to the team. He joins teammate Chris Kellermann who was named to the squad last year.
• Spica is CMU’s fifth selection since 2000. Others recent honorees include Chad Pleiness in 2000, and Gerrit Brigitha and Chris Kaman in 2001.
