The Chippewas (29-13 overall, 16-2 Mid-American Conference) reached the 20-run plateau for the third time this season in posting their ninth consecutive win. CMU, winner of 22 of its last 25 games overall, maintains a one-game lead over Eastern Michigan in the MAC overall standings.
Eleven different players contributed to CMU’s 22-hit attack on Sunday, the fourth time in 2007 CMU has had at least 22 hits in a game. Junior Tyler Stovall extended his hitting streak to 17 games in impressive fashion, going 4-for-5 with three singles and a three-run homer. He walked once, scored three times and drove in four. His 17-game hitting streak is tied for the sixth-longest in CMU history.
CMU scored six times in the second inning and six times in the fifth to break the game open.
Jeff Helps, who finished just a triple short of the cycle, connected on a two-run home run to jump-start the second inning. Bryan Mitzel added a run-scoring double, Stovall an RBI single and Sean Hoorelbeke a two-run single in the six-run frame.
Two-run singles by Dale Cornstubble and Noah Lankford highlighted CMU’s six-run fifth inning.
Stovall’s three-run homer came in the top of the sixth inning and extended CMU’s lead to 19-3, while Scott Szpyrka added a solo homer, his second of the season, in the ninth.
CMU starter Kurt Lauscher worked seven innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. He has won each of his last six starts.
Scott Boley was 3-for-5 in the loss for Toledo. He hit the first of back-to-back home runs for the Rockets in a four-run seventh inning.
CMU now prepares for next weekend’s showdown at Eastern Michigan. The top two teams in the MAC standings will play a three-game series beginning Friday in Ypsilanti.
