MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University junior outfielder Tyler Stovall (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller HS) has been named to the final watch list for the 2007 Brooks Wallace College Player of the Year Award.
Stovall is one of 112 players nationwide on the watch list for the honor, which is presented by the College Baseball Foundation. He is one of just two players from the Mid-American Conference to make the list.
Stovall leads the Mid-American Conference in batting average (.457), hits (75), runs (49) and runs batted in (48). His batting average ranks second nationally in Division I. He enters this weekend’s series at Eastern Michigan riding a 17-game hitting streak, tied for the sixth-longest in CMU history. He leads CMU with 23 multi-hit games, including a career-best 5-for-6 performance in a 28-12 win at Akron on April 14. He tied a school record with four doubles and scored a school-record six runs in that contest. Overall, Stovall has hit safely in 35 of his 40 games played this season.
The Wallace Award selection committee will narrow the field to 30 semifinalists later this month, with the three award finalists announced during the College World Series in June. The 2007 award will be presented during a banquet at the United Spirit Arena at Texas Tech on July 3.
Last year’s winner was Houston pitcher/designated hitter Brad Lincoln.
CMU (29-13 overall, 16-2 MAC) visits Eastern Michigan for a three-game MAC series this weekend. The Chippewas enter the series with a one-game lead over EMU in the conference’s overall standings.
