Women's Soccer's Haelewyn Wins National Championship

MOUNT PLEASANT Incoming freshman Dani Haelewyn (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek HS) of the Central Michigan University women’s soccer team helped her club team to a championship at the 2007 Youth Soccer National Championships late last month. The national tournament took place July 24-29 in Frisco, Texas. 

Haelewyn is a member of the Bloomfield Force Under-18 squad, which won the national title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Slammers FC squad from Newport Beach, Calif. The Force tied the match in the final minute to force extra time, then claimed the championship on penalty kicks, 6-5.  

The Force earned a trip to Texas by winning the USYSA Region II championship in June, besting a field of 56 other U-18 teams from across the Midwest. In the Force’s 6-2 victory in the regional championship game, Haelewyn scored a goal. 

The 2007 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series is the country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament, providing over 185,000 players on more than 10,000 teams from US Youth Soccer’s 55 state associations the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play. In the youth soccer circles, the tournament's championship title is considered one of the most coveted to hold. 

Haelewyn and the eight other incoming freshmen, along with the rest of the 2007 CMU soccer squad, will report for the start of practice later this week. The season opener is August 31 at Elon University.
