Soccer Picked Seventh in MAC Preseason Coaches Poll

MOUNT PLEASANT According the preseason poll of the league’s head coaches released today, the Central Michigan University women’s soccer team has been tabbed to finish seventh in the Mid-American Conference this season.
CMU is coming off a season in which in won a school-record 13 games and finished third in the conference during the regular season. It was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament by Kent State, 5-4, in double overtime.
The Chippewas graduated six senior starters from last year’s squad, but do return several veterans including second team All-MAC defender Erin Douglas and last year’s MAC Freshman of the Year Stephanie Martin.
Ball State, which captured the regular season title in the MAC last season, was selected as the favorite to win the league again this season. They edged out Bowling Green (second) and Ohio (third) for the top spot in the poll. Miami (fourth), Kent State (fifth) and Northern Illinois (sixth) rounded out the top half of the rankings.
Following CMU, defending MAC Tournament champion Toledo and Eastern Michigan tied for eighth in the poll, with Buffalo checking in the 10th spot. Akron (11th) and Western Michigan (12th) completed the preseason projections.
The Chippewas open their 2007 season on August 31 with a game at Elon University in Elon, N.C. The home opener is slated for September 14 against Niagara. Mid-American Conference action begins on September 28 at Ball State.
