NORMAL, Ill. For the second consecutive match, the Central Michigan University women’s soccer team was shut out, falling to Illinois State this afternoon by a score of 3-0. It’s the second straight loss for the Chippewas after a season-opening win over Elon last Friday night.
ISU (3-0-0) sophomore Ammanda Wisniewski had a hat trick to account for all the offense and Redbird goalkeeper Katie Grill-Donovan made eight saves to keep the Chippewas (1-2-0) off the scoreboard.
CMU once again generated several offensive chances, firing 15 shots to just eight for Illinois State, but could not find the net. It’s the first time CMU has suffered back-to-back shutout losses since 2005 (at Air Force and vs. Cincinnati).
"We had some very good chances early that we weren’t able to capitalize on, and that would have changed the tenor of the match," CMU head coach Tony DiTucci said. "As the match wore on, we made some mental mistakes that allowed Illinois State to have some good chances and they did capitalize on them."
Sophomore forward Amanda Waugh was CMU’s most dangerous attacker on Friday, firing seven shots in the match, four of which were on goal. Stephanie Martin had two shots on goal.
Freshman Hannah Bengtson got the start in goal for CMU and took the loss, giving up one of ISU’s three goals and making one save in playing the first half. Sophomore Kristen Hubright took over in the second half, allowing the final two goals against a pair of saves in her 45 minutes of play.
"We had some good individual efforts and we played well for parts of the match, but we didn’t do enough for 90 minutes," DiTucci said. "Illinois State came to play and played with fight and intensity. We need to learn from this match today and come out on Sunday excited to play, and I think we will."
CMU will look to get back on the winning track on Sunday afternoon when it faces IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind. The contest with the Mastodons will kick off at 1 p.m.
