Chippewas Honoring 1977 and ?87 MAC Hoops Champs

MOUNT PLEASANT Two of the top teams in Central Michigan University men’s basketball history will be recognized during a reunion game this season.
The Chippewas are welcoming back a pair of Mid-American Conference championship teams the 1977 and 1987 squads.
Both teams will be recognized during CMU’s home game against Northern Illinois on Saturday, Jan. 19. Tipoff in Rose Arena is set for 6:30 p.m.
Complimentary tickets are available for members of those teams and their families. There will also be a postgame gathering at Cheers in Mount Pleasant.
The Comfort Inn is offering a special room rate of $109 per night. Reservations can be made until Jan. 5 by calling 989-772-4000 and asking for the CMU men’s basketball rate.
The 1977 squad went 18-10 overall under head coach Dick Parfitt. CMU finished as MAC co-champion with a 13-3 record. The Chippewas went on to the NCAA Tournament where CMU fell to UNC-Charlotte in overtime in Bloomington, Ind. Leonard Drake led the CMU in scoring and Ben Poquette was the team’s top rebounder.
The 1987 team went 22-8 overall under head coach Charlie Coles. The Chippewas won the MAC title with a 14-2 record and added the MAC Tournament title with a 64-63 victory over Kent State in the final. Central advanced to the NCAAs but dropped a decision to UCLA in Salt Lake City, Utah. Junior Dan Majerle led CMU in scoring, rebounding and steals while Tommie Johnson led the team in assists.
