MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan University outfielder Tyler Stovall (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller HS) ranks fifth in a field of nearly 2,000 college students nationwide at the halfway point of the Barron’s Challenge stock-picking contest.
Each year, more than 2,300 professors and college students across the nation compete in the Barron's Challenge, trying to create the best $100,000 hypothetical stock portfolios by generating the most revenue. At the end of the contest, top portfolios receive grand prizes of $1,500, with second and third prizes in each category of $1,000 and $500.
As of Dec. 31, Stovall had generated a net gain of 24 percent through his portfolio. The personal financial planning major credits a knowledge of the state of the U.S. economy for his success in the competition.
"I felt that with a recession looming, the housing market slumping and many mortgage lenders writing down large sums of money, this would be a good time to bet against them," said Stovall.
Stovall, a senior with a 3.81 grade-point average, was named 2007 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year after hitting a league-leading .391. He also led the conference in hits (88) and runs batted in (59), tied for first in runs scored (58) and ranked second in stolen bases (20).
Both the American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball magazine tabbed Stovall as a third team All-American in 2007, and the College Baseball Foundation has named him to the 2008 watch list for the Brooks Wallace Award.
An Academic All-America second team selection in 2007, Stovall is a member of Golden Key Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
