ATHENS, Ohio Shots and scoring opportunities favored the Central Michigan soccer team on Friday, but for the second straight match, it wasn’t enough.
The Chippewas (11-4-1, 6-2-1 Mid-American) lost to the Ohio Bobcats, 1-0, at Chessa Field.
CMU held a decisive edge over OU in both shots (17-8) and corner kicks (6-3), but was shut out for the second straight contest.
“We had several opportunities to go ahead and make it easy on ourselves in the first fifteen minutes,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “Unfortunately, the execution was not there and we failed to take advantage.”
The contest was scoreless going into the second half and remained that way until Jasmine Merith scored from 10 yards out in the 58th minute to give the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
“The Bobcats made a very aggressive play in the box to score that goal,” Anagnost said. “We did not come out as aggressive as we needed to early in the second half, but we picked it up after falling behind.”
The loss knocked Central out of first place in the MAC, two points back of Toledo, who defeated Buffalo 2-1. It is the first time this season that the Chippewas have not held a share of first place in the conference.
Shay Mannino got the start in goal and turned aside three of the four shots she faced.
The Chippewas return to action on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest with the Akron Zips.
