DELAND, Fla. -- After a rainout on Tuesday forced a doubleheader, Stetson proved to be rude hosts as they swept the Central Michigan baseball team in a doubleheader at Melching Field on Wednesday.
Stetson took the first game 13-3 and game two by a 11-5 margin.
In the first game the Hatters took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but the Chippewas tied it in the second on a suicide squeeze by Jeff Helps.
CMU actually held a 2-1 lead after Sean Hoorelbeke’s second home run of the season, but the Hatters plated three in the fourth, two in the fifth, five in the sixth and two in the seventh. Stetson pounded out 16 hits in the offensive explosion.
Hoorelbeke finished game one 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Tyler Stovall went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run scored. Bryce Morrow (0-1) took the loss for the Chippewas, while Blake Marsocci (2-0) was the beneficiary of the run support by Stetson.
In game two the Hatter offense picked up right where it left off, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first three innings off Central starter Danny Taylor to take a 6-0 lead. CMU broke through in the fourth with a pair of runs, but Stetson answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and two more in the seventh.
The Chippewas would score single runs in each of the game’s final three innings to produce the final margin. Four of CMU’s 10 hits went for extra bases, including a pair of doubles for Jeff Digati and one each by Tom Howard and Tyler Kipke. Digati was the only CMU batter with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Other RBI in the game belonged to Casey Ingle, Brendan Emmett and Jeff Nowaczyk.
Taylor took the loss for CMU, falling to 0-2 on the year. Andy Mauldin picked up the win in relief for Stetson (6-4).
Central (1-8) will now travel to the Bradenton, Fla., to face Eastern Kentucky, Vermont and Fairfield to round out its spring trip.
