BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Dan Taylor tossed a complete game in the second half of a Saturday doubleheader to salvage a split between Central Michigan and Bowling Green at Warren E. Steller Field on Saturday.
The Falcons took game one, 10-3, before Taylor's complete-game effort helped the Chippewas post a 6-2 victory in the second contest. Tyler Stovall broke out of a slump, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the first game and Matt Faiman was the star at the plate in game two, registering a pinch-hit two-run single that gave Central (10-16, 2-5 MAC) some much needed breathing room.
Game One
Four errors led to three unearned runs as the Falcons took game one, 10-3. Each team pounded out 11 hits, but the Falcons were more efficient in their opportunities. BGSU scored two runs in the second, four in the fifth and two each in the sixth and eighth innings while CMU scored single runs in the first, fourth and seventh frames.
Tyler Stovall led the Chippewas' attack with a 3-for-4, two RBI effort. Jeff Helps also registered three hits (3-for-5, run) and James Teas went 2-for-4.
CMU starting pitcher Eric Lawrence (1-3) struggled, going five innings and allowing six runs on seven hits while walking three. Five runs were earned and he struck out one. Jesse Hernandez gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk over 2.1 innings in relief.
Game Two
Dan Taylor (1-2) tossed a complete game, scattering eight hits and a pair of walks while allowing just two runs and striking out two in a 6-2 CMU victory in the night cap.
Taylor gave up a solo home run leading off the bottom of the first and an RBI double in the fourth, but stranded six Falcons in scoring position to escape further damage.
Jeff Nowaczyk went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Billy Anderson (2-for-4, two runs, RBI), Jeff Digati (1-for-3, RBI) and Matt Faiman (1-for-2, two RBI) also made significant contributions. Jeff Helps also extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the eighth.
Trailing 1-0, CMU scored three in the fourth sparked by back-to-back doubles by Sean Hoorelbeke and Jeff Nowaczyk.
After BGSU scored a run in the bottom half of the fourth, CMU stretched its lead back to four with a three-run eighth. Pinch hitter Ricky Clark singled to lead off the frame and took third on Anderson's double to right. Tyler Kipke was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Faiman, who drove in Clark and Anderson with a single up the middle. A double-play scored Kipke from third for the final margin.
The two teams will play the rubber match of the three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
