MOUNT PLEASANT -- For the first time since 1995, the Central Michigan baseball team was swept in its season series against Western Michigan.
The Broncos took the final game of the three game set and second game of a doubleheader, 5-3, at Theunissen Stadium on Sunday. Noah Lankford provided a majority of the offense with two of the Chippewas’ three hits, including a two-run double in the eighth.
Western took a 1-0 lead in the third on a two out RBI single, but Central responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jeff Nowaczyk walked to lead off the inning, moved up to third on a Noah Lankford single and scored on a ground out by Matt Faiman.
The Broncos would touch up CMU starting pitcher Steve Teno for four runs in the fifth, the big blows a Kyle Gendron solo home run leading off the frame and a two-run single by Kyle Galbraith. Teno (7-4) was chased after 5.1 innings of work, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk.
The score stayed at 5-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when Noah Lankford lined a two-out, two-run double to draw within two, 5-3. After a walk to Faiman put the tying run aboard, Bronco reliever Joe Sheets was able to retire pinch-hitter Billy Anderson on a fly ball to center.
The Chippewas (26-24, 11-12 MAC) are now in a dogfight for the two wild card spots in the Mid-American Conference Tournament later this month.
