DEKALB, Ill. -- On a day where the offense looked like it was going to be clicking, the Central Michigan baseball team managed just six hits in a 5-2 loss to Northern Illinois at Ralph McKinzie Field on Friday.
Three of the six hits came in the first inning, when CMU jumped on top, 1-0. Billy Anderson hit a one-out single and would score on a Sean Hoorelbeke RBI double. Brendan Emmett singled to left field giving CMU a chance to expand the lead, but Hoorelbeke was thrown out at the plate.
The Huskies got to CMU starting pitcher Dan Taylor for a run in the second to tie the game at one, and took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fourth that scored thanks to a Chippewa error.
An NIU fielding miscue allowed Central to cut the lead back to one, as Matt Faiman reached on an error to start the inning. He moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Jeff Helps.
A single, a hit batter and a two-run triple by the Huskies produced two more NIU runs, producing the final margin.
The Chippewas (22-21, 9-9 MAC) loaded the bases in the sixth to put the tying runs aboard with one out thanks to a walk, an infield single and a hit batter, but a double play ball erased the threat. A pickoff spoiled another rally in the seventh with two aboard and two out.
Taylor (3-4) made his first Friday start of the season, going the first 5.1 innings. He gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out two. Bryce Morrow worked the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit. He walked one and fanned two. Trevor Feeney tossed 8.1 strong innings for NIU, giving up both CMU runs on six hits. He walked three and picked up five strikeouts. Andy Deain recorded the final two outs for his sixth save of the year.
The two teams will take the field for game two tomorrow at 1 p.m., central.
