Stovall Named Second Team All-Senior All-American

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Tyler Stovall was named second team All-Senior All-America by the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award organization as part of the festivities at this year’s College Baseball World Series.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award has grown into the nation’s premier tribute to college seniors. The award identifies personal qualities that define a complete student-athlete, with criteria including excellence in the classroom, character and community, as well as the candidate’s performance on the field.
Rice University pitcher Cole St.Clair was selected as the 2008 recipient. Emeel Salem of the University of Alabama was the inaugural winner in 2007.
The award was given based on fan voting, a nationwide coaches poll and a national media poll. Stovall was one of the 10 national finalists for the award, securing him a spot on one of the award’s two All-America teams.
The Cincinnati Reds drafted Stovall with the 599th overall selection in the 2008 Major League Baseball first-year player draft. He batted a team-best .332 as a senior, while also leading the team in stolen bases with 26 in 2008. He finished second on the squad in doubles (15), home runs (six) and RBI (47) on his way to earning second team All-Mid-American Conference honors a year after being named MAC Player of the Year as a junior.
Off the field, Stovall also posted a dominating senior campaign. He was named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on May 20 and finished No. 9 overall in the Barron’s National Stock Picking contest. He was also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine third team Academic All-America, becoming the first two-time Academic All-American in CMU baseball history along with Academic All-MAC accolades.
The personal financial planning major sports a 3.81 grade-point average and finished his four-year career with a .342 batting average, 39 doubles, seven triples and 12 home runs. He drove in 120 runs during his career, slugging .492 and reaching base at a .419 clip. He stole 49 bases in 59 career attempts.
