MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan was picked to finish in a tie for third at the Mid-American Conference Men’s Cross Country Championships this fall according to the preseason coaches poll.
CMU will be without longtime coach Craig Fuller who retired after 19 seasons of guiding the Chippewa harriers. Track coaches Jim Knapp and Matt Kaczor will take over the program.
Leading the returnees in 2008 will be Sammy Kiprotich and Riak Mabil who both turned in top 20 performances at last year’s MAC meet where the Chippewas finished third as a team.
Defending champion Eastern Michigan is the favorite to win the team title according to the poll.
The Chippewas open the season this Friday, Aug. 29, by hosting their only home meet of the season, the Jeff Drenth Memorial. The event is being held in University Park on the south side of campus by the Fairfield Inn. Action begins at 4 p.m.
