MOUNT PLEASANT Shutouts are becoming common for the Central Michigan Soccer team. CMU handed IPFW their fifth straight shutout loss at the CMU Soccer Complex on Friday.
Sophomore goalkeeper Shay Mannino turned aside six Mastodon shots to record her third shutout of the season, all in the last four matches. She has not allowed a goal in 266 minutes and 28 seconds.
“Shay continues to impress, she is playing extremely well,” head coach Tony DiTucci said. “She does a great job organizing our defense and that goes a long way in shutting down our opponents.”
Amanda Waugh put Central (5-1) on top 1-0 in the eighth minute when her crossing attempt near the sideline curved in off the post. It was her third goal of the season. Claire Horton added an assist on the tally.
The Chippewas outshot the Mastodons (0-6) 17-10 in the match and had opportunities to widen their lead throughout the contest.
“We had our chances, we just did not capitalize on some of the opportunities we had in the box,” DiTucci said. “We did some nice things, but there needs to be a greater sense of purpose on the field for 90 minutes.”
CMU's 5-1 start is the second best in school history. Central started 7-0 in 2006.
The Chippewas hit the road for the sixth time in seven matches when they take on Valparaiso on Friday, Sept. 19. That match kicks off at 4 p.m.
