MOUNT PLEASANT After going 4-1 in their first five contests on the road, the Central Michigan soccer team comes back to familiar ground this weekend. The Chippewas play their home opener against IPFW on Friday at the CMU Soccer Complex at 4 p.m.
CMU is fresh off a successful weekend in which they won the St. Bonaventure Invitational in Rochester, N.Y. Friday’s match against the Mastodons is the only non-conference home contest of the season.
“We opened up playing some tough teams on the road,” head coach Tony DiTucci said. “We are all excited to be back home in front of our family and friends. We will show them plenty of energy and enthusiasm on Friday.”
IPFW is 0-5 this season, scoring only one goal in the process. The Mastodons have been shutout four straight times and have gone 416 minutes and five seconds without finding the back of the net.
“Sometimes it can be difficult to play teams like IPFW,” DiTucci said. “I'm sure they will be very well prepared and ready for us. We need to show up prepared to work extremely hard for all 90 minutes.”
Central is undefeated in four matches against IPFW. These two teams met last season, Molly Gerst led the Chippewas with two goals as CMU beat the Mastodons in Fort Wayne, 8-1.
CMU News and Notes
Leading the Way - The Chippewas offense is paced by junior Stephanie Martin (4 g, 2 a). When she scores, they win. Martin has scored a goal in four of Central’s five contests (all wins). The only match that she did not register a goal was in a 1-0 shutout loss against St. Bonaventure. Three of her four tallies have been game-winners.
Climbing the Ladder - Martin’s goal against Cornell on Sunday was the 21st of her career (fourth most in school history). She is one goal away from tying Emilie VilleMonte for third on the school’s all-time list. She is a mere three goals away from tying Allison Campbell for most goals in school history. Martin is also adept at setting up her teammates; she has 12 assists in her career (two this season). That total is fourth best in CMU history. Her 10 points this season gives her 54, third on the all-time list at CMU.
Shutting the Door - Sophomore goalkeeper Shay Mannino turned aside four Cornell shots on Sunday and registered her second shutout in the past three contests, allowing only one goal in that span. Going back to the St. Bonaventure tilt, Mannino and the Chippewas have not been scored on in 176 minutes and 28 seconds.
Familiar Contributions - CMU’s top three goal scorers from a year ago are picking up where they left off. Amanda Waugh, Martin, and Gerst have scored eight of Central’s 10 goals this season. They scored 22 of the team’s 28 goals a year ago. Martin and Waugh each tallied a goal in CMU’s 3-0 win over Cornell on Sunday.
School Comes First - The CMU soccer team is also dominant in the classroom. Last season, no soccer team had a higher cumulative grade point average. The team posted a 3.61 mark, tied with Murray State. That's the third straight year Central has boasted the nation's top mark.
