MOUNT PLEASANT The Central Michigan University soccer team enjoyed a breakthrough 2008 campaign, one that garnered national attention.
The Chippewas finished the season as the nation's 22nd most improved team according to Somis Sports. CMU went 12-5-3 this past season with a 6-2-3 record in the Mid-American Conference after finishing 8-10 and 4-7 in the MAC in 2007.
One year after missing the MAC Tournament for only the second time in school history, Central entered the postseason tourney as the No. 2 seed, only the second time the program has finished higher than third in the MAC.
CMU featured five all-conference performers in 2008 and three all-freshmen athletes, led by first team selections Stephanie Martin (Chesterfield Township, Mich./Regina HS) and Amanda Waugh (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson HS). Head coach Tom Anagnost was also named MAC Coach of the Year for the team’s improvement.
According to the Somis Sports website, the Chippewas improved their 2007 rating by 1.31, which was based on net goals (goals scored minus goals against). Every team on the list had an improvement by at least 1.19, led by Texas State with a 1.98 improvement rating. Eastern Michigan was the only other MAC school to make the list, coming in at No. 14.
