Maroon Takes First Two Games of Fall World Series

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A pair of quality starts have helped the Maroon squad take a 2-0 series lead over the Gold squad in the Central Michigan baseball team's Fall World Series at Theunissen Stadium.
In the opener, Maroon starter Jesse Hernandez (6.0 innings, 1 ER, nine strikeouts) was out-dueled by Gold starter and 2009 All-Mid-American Conference second-team pick Trent Howard, who threw 5.1 shutout innings while allowing just two hits, but it was Maroon who got the big hits late, scoring three times in the seventh for the 3-2 win.
Scott Phillion went 4-for-5 for the Gold squad and Nate Theunissen had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Chris Savas and Joey Henry each knocked in a run for Maroon.
In the second game, Dietrich Enns tossed seven strong innings, giving up a pair of runs on five hits, to pick up the win as Maroon rolled to a 12-2 win.
Maroon scored two in the first, single runs in the second, thrid, fourth and fifth and broke out for six in the eighth.
Reid Rooney, Sam Russell, Chris Savas, Dale Cornstubble and Blake Geschke each drove in two for Maroon. Savas also paced the field with three hits.
