MOUNT PLEASANT — The Central Michigan soccer team took another step closer to history in a scoreless tie against Toledo at the CMU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Chippewas (14-3-1, 9-0-1 Mid-American) posted their 13th consecutive shutout, tied for the second longest streak of consecutive shutouts in NCAA history. CMU has not allowed a goal in 1227:26.
Neither team put a great deal of offense together in the first half. UT possessed the ball in CMU’s end more in the first 45 minutes, but the Chippewas had the best scoring opportunity of the opening frame. Stephanie Martin nearly put Central on the board in the 33rd minute when she blasted a shot from just in front of the attacking box, but Toledo keeper Vicki Traven sprawled to her left to make the save, keeping the match scoreless at halftime.
The Maroon and Gold controlled play for most of the second half, outshooting the Rockets, 6-0, in the final regulation frame. Despite a pair of giveaways by Traven, Central was unable to find the back of the net.
“More of our kids imposed themselves in the second half,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “I give Toledo a lot of credit though, they made things difficult for us.”
Neither team fired a shot in the first overtime period, but Toledo created some quality opportunities in the second overtime. The Rockets fired three shots, all on goal, but Shay Mannino was equal to the task and kept UT off the board.
“On the positive side, we did not allow a goal,” Anagnost said. “However, I’m not pleased with how we played. Up top and at the center of the field we can be a little better. Hopefully we get a little hungrier, because that’s what it will take to beat a team like we faced today.”
The Chippewas outshot the Rockets, 10-5, on Sunday afternoon, but Toledo owned a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mannino turned aside all four shots she faced to post her 13th shutout this season and the 25th of her career, only two behind Anne Decker’s school record. The Grosse Ile, Mich., native is riding a personal shutout streak of 1123:39, the third-longest streak for any goalkeeper in NCAA history.
Central concludes its regular season when it faces rival Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti on Thursday.
