MOUNT PLEASANT — For the third straight match, the Central Michigan field hockey team played tight with a Mid-American Conference favorite. Unforunately, CMU lost its third straight one-goal decision, 2-1, to the Ohio Bobcats at the CMU Field Hockey Complex on Saturday.
The Chippewas (3-7, 1-4 Mid-American) and Bobcats played a defensive struggle in the first half as both teams finished with four shots and two penalty corners in the first half.
Ohio drew first blood in the 15th minute when Katherine Ballard fired a shot through traffic off a penalty corner to give OU a 1-0 lead.
The Maroon and Gold responded in the 31st minute when Kelly Jordan found Paulina Lee all alone in front of the net for her first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1 going into halftime.
Ohio generated the bulk of the offense in the second half. The Bobcats outshot the Chippewas, 8-3, and held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners in the final 35 minutes.
The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead with 20:51 remaining when Ballard converted off another penalty corner with a shot that went through traffic.
CMU got an opportunity to go on the attack when OU’s Marcy Dull received a yellow card with 11:04 remaining to give Central an 11-on-10 advantage for five minutes. However, the Chippewas were unable to generate enough offense for a tying goal.
“This is a disappointing loss,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “I thought we played pretty well defensively, but Ohio did a few things on penalty corners that were tough for us to pick up.
“OU is a good defensive team, but we need to find a way to create offense. Our passes were errant today and I thought that hurt us a lot whenever we went on the attack.”
Melinda Curran was stellar in net once again for the Chippewas, turning aside eight of 10 shots.
Central returns to action next Saturday when it faces Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.
