LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Central Michigan cross country program put together a pair of top-10 finishes at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, with the men's team finishing fourth and the women in seventh.
The men finished fourth (205 pts.) in a field of 38 teams in the 8K run, while the women were up against 34 other schools in their 5K race and finished seventh (208 pts.).
“The women ran really well as a group and the men did a nice job closing the gap compared to our last meet,” head coach Willie Randolph said. “We did a nice job competing against some very good schools, and we did well but we have some work to do before Pre-Nationals.”
Riak Mabil paced the men's squad with a 24th-place finish in 24:41 and Melissa Darling paved the way for the women, finishing 18th in 17:55, a personal-best.
Chris Pankow (33rd, 24:55) and Sammy Kiprotich (50th, 25:10) also finished in the top fifty runners in a field of 334 for the men, and Danielle Dakroub (29th, 18:14), Holly Anderson (41st, 18:24) and Kylee Kubacki (48th, 18:29) gave the women's program four runners in the top-50 in a field of 291.
“We had a gap of less than 40 seconds between our top-five runners on the men’s side and that’s great,” assistant coach Matt Kaczor said. “The women ran well but we’re still working hard and coming together. It was a good stepping stone as we move toward the Mid-American Conference championships later this month.”
Stephen Sambu of Rend Lake College took the individual title on the men's side, and host Louisville (68 pts.) claimed the team crown. Janet Jesang (Western Kentucky) won the women's race with Purdue taking the team title (88 pts.)
