MOUNT PLEASANT — The Central Michigan women’s soccer team’s defense shined through a rainy Friday afternoon at the CMU Soccer Complex as the Chippewas allowed only five shots and recorded their eighth consecutive shutout in a 3-0 victory over Ball State.
CMU (10-3, 5-0 Mid-American) has won a school-record eight straight matches and is 5-0 in MAC play for the second year in a row. The shutout is the Maroon and Gold’s 10th of the season, tying last season’s record. The Chippewas have not allowed a goal in 752:09, a new program record. The eight straight shutouts are also the second most consecutive shutouts recorded by a MAC school (Ohio had nine in 2004).
Ball State came out aggressively in the opening minutes, pinning Central in its defensive end and firing a pair of shots on goal.
The Chippewas controlled play for the remainder of the first half, outshooting the Cardinals, 12-3, in the opening frame and holding a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
Despite the territorial domination, BSU goalkeeper Nicole Wood stood tall and kept the score even for most of the opening frame. It appeared that the match would remain scoreless at halftime until Amanda Waugh forced a turnover and beat Wood with a shot that went off the post and into the back of the net with 2:13 remaining to give CMU a 1-0 lead. The tally is Waugh’s second of the season and 19th of her career (tied for fifth all-time at CMU).
“We came out a little slow and I thought the rain had a lot to do with that,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “We managed to regain our composure and started to impose ourselves on Ball State. I thought we defended very well and I am very proud of how the team played today.”
Central came out of the break determined to extend its lead, firing several quality shots at the Ball State net. The Chippewa attack fired six shots, including three on goal, in the first six minutes of the second half, but Wood kept CMU at bay.
CMU’s lead remained at one until the 69th minute when Claire Horton blasted a free kick that rang off the crossbar and Valerie Prause tapped the rebound into a wide open net to put the Chippewas up by a pair. The tally is Prause’s second of the year.
Bethany Allport capped the scoring with 10:37 left with her first collegiate goal when Stephanie Martin’s through ball set her up for a blast from the left side of the 18-yard box.
The Chippewas finished with a dominant edge in both shots (28-5) and corner kicks (11-0) as they added to their record shutout streak. Shay Mannino made four saves to notch her 20th career shutout, seven shy of Anne Decker’s school record.
Central returns to the field on Sunday when it hosts second-place Miami at the CMU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
