MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan sophomore defender Claire Horton (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak HS) has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
Horton maintains a 3.54 grade-point average in the classroom. She was named to the MAC All-Tournament team as she helped the Chippewas to a pair of shutout victories in the MAC Tournament. Horton also tallied the lone goal of CMU’s 1-0 win over Miami in the MAC Championship Match on Sunday, giving the Chippewas their first MAC Tournament title. This is the first time Horton has received the award.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Abbott is the fourth CMU athlete and third member of the soccer team to earn the honor this season. Molly Gerst won the award on Sept. 28 while Chelsi Abbott won it on Oct. 16.
