Central Michigan made its first appearance in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game in 2006, taking on the Ohio Bobcats at Ford Field in Detroit. The Chippewas secured their fifth MAC title in program history with a 31-10 win over Ohio.
On CMU’s second possession of the first quarter, the MAC Freshman on the Year, Dan LeFevour, led his offense 89 yards down the field in just seven plays to start the scoring. The drive was capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass to Obed Cétoute.
In the second quarter, Ohio tied the score with a 2-yard run by Kalvin McRae. CMU responded with a 71-yard touchdown pass to Damien Linson, which later proved to be the game winner. Rick Albreski added to Central’s lead by kicking a 27-yard field goal late in the half.
Ohio’s final points came in the third in the form of a 33-yard field goal by Matt Lasher to get the Bobcats within a touchdown, 17-10.
The fourth quarter belonged to Ontario Sneed and the rest of the Chippewas. LeFevour threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Sneed, and Sneed later scored on a MAC Championship Game record 96-yard touchdown run to cap the scoring.
LeFevour finished 22-30 passing for 314 yards and three touchdowns. Sneed ended the game with 130 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Damien Linson’s 191 receiving yards not only earned him the game MVP, but set a MAC Championship Game record. Bryan Anderson caught six passes for 70 yards.
CMU’s defense played a big part of the victory forcing three turnovers and slowing the MAC’s best rushing attack to 87 yards on 39 carries.
The Chippewas went on to beat Middle Tennessee State in the Motor City Bowl, 31-14, in CMU’s first bowl appearance since 1994.
