Four Soccer Players Earn All-Region Honors

MOUNT PLEASANT — A school-record four members of the Central Michigan soccer team were named to the Great Lakes All-Region team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Freshman Bailey Brandon (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Churchill HS) became the first soccer player in school history to earn first-team all-region honors. Junior Shay Mannino (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) and sophomore Liesel Toth (Victor, N.Y./Victor HS) were each placed on the all-region second-team and sophomore Claire Horton (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak HS) earned third-team honors.
In her first season, Brandon started every match on defense for the Mid-American Conference champion Chippewas. Her defensive play helped CMU post 19 shutouts, tied for the most in country. Offensively, Brandon finished with seven points on a goal and five assists (t-sixth in the MAC). She was named MAC Freshman of the Year and second-team All-MAC.
Mannino started all 24 matches in goal for CMU and finished with a school-record 17 solo shutouts and a 0.60 goals against average. She was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and was a first-team All-MAC selection. The junior strung together a shutout streak of 1134:36, the third-longest streak ever recorded by a Division I goalkeeper.
Toth also started every contest on defense for the Chippewas and was a first-team All-MAC selection. She helped CMU post 13 consecutive shutouts, tied for the second-longest streak in Division I history. She also scored three goals this season, including one in CMU’s NCAA Tournament win over No. 24 Purdue.
Horton is the third member of CMU’s defense that posted a 0.64 goals against average (16th in the country). The Royal Oak, Mich., native started all 24 matches and tallied six points on two goals and two assists.
The four all-region picks are the most in school history, besting the three selections the Chippewas had in 2006. It is also the most in the MAC this season.
CMU went 17-4-3 in 2009 and posted a 9-0-2 mark in the MAC to claim its first conference title in school history.
