Field Hockey Lands 15 Players on NFHCA National Academic Squad

MOUNT PLEASANT The honors keep coming for the Central Michigan University field hockey team.
A record 15 members of the Central Michigan University field hockey team have been named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Squad.
Among those earning the NFHCA academic honor were senior Moyra Betuzzi (Kelowna, British Columbia/Mount Boucherie SS), sophomore Amy Binder (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), junior Melinda Curran (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day HS), junior Lizl Gericke (Fairfax, Va./Woodson HS), senior Alison Kist (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall HS), freshman Paulina Lee (Pittsford, N.Y./Mendon HS), freshman Lauren Leed (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing HS), senior Amanda Lucik (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus HS), freshman Anastasia Netto (Trinidad & Tobago/St. Joseph’s Convent), senior Kristen Palinski (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), junior Tara Schiltz (South Wales, N.Y./Holland Central HS), junior Kahla Schwall (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community HS), sophomore Kim Sihota (Richmond, British Columbia/Hugh McRoberts HS), freshman Danika Stone (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Pointe South SS) and freshman Amanda von Leer (Medford, N.J./Lenape HS).
The 15 honorees mark the most in a single season for CMU, besting the 11 honorees from 2008 that was the previous record. No other Mid-American Conference school placed more student-athletes on the academic squad than CMU.
The National Academic Squad program recognizes those collegiate student-athletes who have achieved a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade-point average through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year. First-year students are eligible for the honor.
CMU also received the team academic award from the NFHCA, finishing with the fifth-highest GPA in the nation at 3.45. The team award recognizes those institutions that achieve a minimum cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year.
