MOUNT PLEASANT -- Northern Illinois got four scoreless innings from its bullpen to guide the Huskies to an 11-5 victory over the Central Michigan baseball squad at Theunissen Stadium on Saturday.
CMU's pitching staff couldn't contain NIU's offense, who pounded out at least 15 hits for the second straight game.
Central took an early 2-1 lead after the first inning thanks to a leadoff single by Tyler Kipke and a double by Billy Anderson, followed by a ground ball and a sacrifice fly.
After NIU tied it in the second, the Huskies scored twice in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. However, the Chippewas battled right back to take a 5-4 edge thanks to the first career homer by William Arnold and a RBI double by Rhett Goodmiller.
The Huskies chased Chippewas' starting pitcher Dan Taylor in the sixth with a pair of runs for a 7-5 edge.
Taylor finished with a line of seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out five in 5.1 innings. Devan Kline, Matt Loomis and Zach Cooper would finish the contest.
With both starters out of the contest, the relievers took over, and NIU's corps would allow just two hits over the final four innings to preserve the lead for Northern Illinois. The big hit in the final three innings came off the bat of NIU's Joe Etcheverry, who clubbed a three-run homer in the top of the ninth.
Anderson, Arnold and Brendan Emmett each had two hits for CMU.
The win drops the Chippewas (20-25, 8-12 MAC) percentage points behind the Huskies (17-28, 8-11 MAC) in the Mid-American Conference West Division.
The two teams will meet for the final game of a three-game set tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. The game will serve as CMU's Senior Day, honoring senior pitchers Taylor, Steve Teno and Chris Kupillas.
