MOUNT PLEASANT -- Josh Collmenter’s promising young career with the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise continues to grow with each passing outing.
The right-handed starting pitcher was named to the California League All-Star Game, representing the Visalia Rawhide, the single-A advanced affiliate of the Diamondbacks.
The 2007 Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year worked a scoreless inning in the contest, fanning a pair of batters while walking one en route to earning a hold in the victory over the Carolina League All-Stars.
Collmenter ranks 11th in ERA (3.76) entering the month of July among the hurlers in the 10-team league. He owns a 6-5 record while fanning 77 batters in 83.2 innings. He tossed his first professional complete game in a four-hitter against San Jose on May 27.
He ranks 12th in innings pitched and in strikeouts, while allowing the league’s third-fewest base runners per nine innings.
The 15th round selection has pitched the 2009 season with Visalia after being promoted following a dazzling 2008 campaign with Arizona’s class-A affiliate, the South Bend Silver Hawks.
He finished his first full professional season with a 12-8 record with a 3.41 ERA in 27 starts. He struck out 123 batters in 145.1 innings of work, all while holding opponents to a .230 batting average. He led the Silver Hawks in ERA, starts and strikeouts, while ranking third in Arizona’s farm system in wins and ERA and fourth in whiffs.
He’s earned the California League Pitcher of the Week honor once this season, after earning the distinction once in 2008 for the Midwest League.
Collmenter, a 2007 third-team All-American, is in his third season in the Diamondbacks’ system, including a year at the short season class A level in 2007 after signing with Arizona.
He is 24-16 (.600) in his minor league career with a 3.35 ERA in 54 starts. He’s fanned 257 batters in 295.1 innings while walking 88 and giving up 256 hits.
During his collegiate career, Collmenter splashed his name throughout the record books. He ranks among CMU’s leaders in career strikeouts (288, first) wins (24, fourth), innings pitched (301.1, third) and ERA (2.63, eighth).
As a junior, he finished just a third of an inning shy of tying the school’s mark for a single season’s workload, tossing 116.1 innings (Ty Dunham, 116.2, 2005).
During his 2007 campaign, Collmenter was simply dominant. He was 9-4 with a 1.93 ERA, including an 8-1 mark with a 0.71 ERA in nine MAC starts. His postseason awards list includes: MAC Pitcher of the Year, All-MAC first team, All-Mideast Region first team, All-America third team by Baseball America, Great Lakes Region Pitcher of the Year by InsidePitching.com, Academic All-District IV second team, Academic All-MAC and CMU’s Most Valuable Player.
His 117 strikeouts that season also rank second on the single season list.
