Soccer Grinds Out 1-0 Win Over St. Bonaventure

MOUNT PLEASANT — Shay Mannino turned aside two shots and Laura Twidle provided all the offense the Central Michigan soccer team needed in a 1-0 win over St. Bonaventure at the CMU Soccer Complex on Friday.
The shutout was Mannino’s second straight and 14th of her career as CMU opened the season 2-0 for the second straight year. The Chippewas earned their fifth consecutive win in their home opener with the victory.
The Chippewas pressured early in the contest, firing two shots on goal early that Bonnies’ keeper Nicole Markert turned aside.
SBU nearly got on the board in the eighth minute when Marilyn swiped a CMU pass just outside the box and beat Mannino, but fired the shot wide of the goal.
St. Bonaventure continued pressuring late in the opening frame when Dakota Carroll got a shot past Mannino in the 33rd minute, but Bailey Brandon kept the ball out of the net and cleared it away as the match remained scoreless at halftime.
“That was the play of the game,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “Bailey did a tremendous job keeping the ball out of the net. She played a good game, but that play was a difference maker.”
The Chippewas’ defense led the way in the second half as the Maroon and Gold did not yield a single shot attempt in the final stanza.
The contest remained scoreless until the 71st minute when Twidle intercepted a Bonnies’ clearing attempt and blasted a shot into the net from the top of the box. The tally was the freshman’s second in as many contests and gave the Chippewas a lead they would not relinquish.
“Laura made a nice shot to score a huge goal for us,” Anagnost said. “She is a very dangerous player who can take advantage of any opportunity she gets around the net.”
CMU outshot SBU 15-6 and also managed an 8-1 advantage in corner kick attempts.
The Chippewas head to Bloomington, Ind. for a 2 p.m. tilt against Indiana on Sunday. Live stats will be available on Indiana’s official athletics website.
