MOUNT PLEASANT — Another home win, another nail biter.
Brielle Heitman’s tally with 2:28 remaining in overtime gave the Central Michigan women’s soccer team a hard fought, 1-0 victory over Illinois State at the CMU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The win improves the Chippewas to 4-3 this season and 3-0 at the CMU Soccer Complex. All three home victories have been 1-0 decisions and each goal has been scored in the second half or overtime.
“This was a great character win for us today,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “Illinois State is a very good team and they put a lot of pressure on us early. We came out a little flat, but we figured things out in the second half. I am very proud of how our women played today.”
ISU came out sharp early, the Redbirds jumped out to a 4-1 edge in shots in the first 20 minutes. Central picked things up and narrowed the gap as shots were 6-5 in favor of Illinois State at halftime.
The Chippewas controlled the pace in the second half and outshot the Redbirds, 7-3, in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
CMU nearly took the lead on several occasions late in the second half. Heitman nearly put Central on the board in the 75th minute when her long shot beat ISU goalkeeper Sasha Reiber, but clanged off the crossbar and stayed out of the net. Autumn Hawkins was nearly the hero in the final seconds of regulation when she fired from just outside the 18-yard box but also drew iron off the post to send the contest to overtime.
It appeared the contest would need another overtime session until Laura Twidle gathered a loose ball and crossed the ball to an uncovered Heitman in the box, who worked the ball around the keeper and tapped it in for her first collegiate goal.
“Brielle trained very well in pracice this week,” Anagnost said. “She got more playing time for us this weekend and really made an impact for us. She is getting more comfortable on the field.”
The Chippewas finished the match with a 13-9 advantage in shots while the Redbirds held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Shay Mannino played every second between the pipes for CMU and made three saves to register her 15th career shutout.
CMU concludes its three-match home stand on Friday when it hosts Detroit.
