ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Central Michigan soccer team grabbed a pair of early leads, but three unanswered goals put them on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision at Michigan on Thursday night.
It took less than 90 seconds for CMU (2-2) to get on the board. A crossing attempt deflected off a Michigan defender and into the net for an own goal in the second minute of the match to put the Maroon and Gold up, 1-0.
The Wolverines evened the score when Jackie Carron converted off a corner kick in the 13th minute.
Central responded 37 seconds later when Laura Twidle’s long blast found the far corner for her third goal of the season to put the Chippewas back in front, 2-1.
"Laura's goal was exactly the type of play we practice," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "I thought we did a nice job attacking Michigan with the ball tonight."
The Chippewas remained in front until the 33rd minute when Michigan’s Amy Klippert pounced on a loose ball and tapped it in to tie the score, 2-2, heading into halftime.
Michigan’s Kim Eunnie gave Michigan a 3-2 lead off a free kick in the 55th minute, the Wolverine’s first lead of the night.
UM added an insurance tally in the 66th minute when Courtney Mercier’s shot went through a crowd and found the back of the net.
The Chippewas continued to pressure the Wolverine defense and drew to within a goal, 4-3, in the 81st minute when Valerie Prause found the back of the net from the top of the box.
CMU fired three more shots in the final minutes, but was unable to get the match to overtime.
"Michigan deserves a lot of credit for pulling out the win tonight," Anagnost said. "It was a disappointing result for us. Our last two opponents have presented a physical element that we haven't faced. I feel we need to physically bring it from the get go. I would like to see us be the aggressor in our one-v-one battles. Michigan did a lot of subtle things that made a difference. Our players need to develop the savviness to create fouls and capitalize off the opportunities that come with them."
The Chippewas outshot the Wolverines 16-11 in the contest. Central also held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Shay Mannino got the start in goal and allowed four goals before being replaced by Stefanie Turner.
The Maroon and Gold return to the pitch on Sunday when they face Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich. The contest kicks off at 1 p.m.
