CMU Wins 3-0 on Senior Day

MOUNT PLEASANT — Three underclassmen propelled Central Michigan past Northern Illinois on Senior Day at the CMU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Chippewas (11-3-1 overall, 8-0-0 MAC) outshot the Huskies (7-7-1 overall, 3-4-1 MAC) 29-5 on the day, controlling the attack through all 90 minutes.
"We had a good weekend," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "Today was really good, especially in the second half. We were more aggressive and we exerted ourselves a little more on offense. We created a lot of opportunities today."
The Chippewas came out firing, putting pressure on NIU freshman goalkeeper Amy Carr. A header attempt by Bailey Brandon in the eighth minute of the contest nearly gave CMU their first lead but Carr made a save in traffic.
The Maroon and Gold took the lead just 16 minutes into the contest off a long throw by Brandon. The sophomore's long throw from the west sideline made its way through the box only to find fellow sophomore Laura Twidle who buried the shot to score her fourth goal of the season and give the CMU a 1-0 lead.
Just 12 minutes later, Ashley Mejilla extended the lead to 2-0 off Estee Outcalt's first career assist. After a Mejilla shot was saved by Carr, Outcalt touched the ball to Mejilla who shot from the right side of the box and scored for her fourth goal of the season.
The Huskies managed just three shots during the first 45 minutes of play, with senior goalkeeper Shay Mannino making two saves to earn the win. Mannino is now 8-1-1 on the season and recorded her 40th career win as a Chippewa.
The second half was all CMU, as it outshot the Huskies 21-2 in the final 45 minutes of play.
Freshman Jennifer Gassman put the nail in the coffin in the 89th minute of play, streaking across the box to score on an assist by sophomore Bethany Allport. The goal was the second of Gassman's career, while Allport recorded her second assist of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stefanie Turner relieved Mannino in the second half, making two saves to preserve the shutout for CMU.
CMU will be back in action when it travels to Toledo on Friday, Oct. 22 with first place in the MAC West Division on the line. Both teams come into the contest 8-0-0 in MAC play.
