TOLEDO, Ohio - Eric Page returned two kickoffs for scores, caught two touchdown passes and threw a touchdown pass to lead Toledo to a 42-31 win over Central Michigan in the regular season finale on Friday.
Page accounted for 344 all-purpose yards in leading the Rockets to their fifth win in the last six games.
Toledo led 28-14 at halftime after a back-and-forth first half.
On just the third play from scrimmage, UT quarterback Terrance Owens hooked up with Kenny Stafford for a 75-yard touchdown throw. The Chippewas answered with an 11-play, 71-yard scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard Carl Volny touchdown run, that knotted the score at 7-7.
Page returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, then caught scoring passes from Owens on both of the Rockets' next two possessions as Toledo extended its lead to 28-7 midway through the second quarter.
CMU followed Page's second touchdown catch its second long scoring drive of the half. The Chippewas covered 74 yards in 10 plays, the last of which was a 1-yard touchdown run by Zurlon Tipton that drew the visitors within 28-14 with 3:31 left in the half.
The Chippewas made it back-to-back scoring drives when David Harman booted a 33-yard field goal to open the second half. Page, however, returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, and Toledo led 35-17 with 10:29 remaining in the third quarter.
Later in the third quarter, the Chippewas drove from their own 9-yard line to the Toledo 6. Ryan Radcliff's throw to Tipton in the left flat fell incomplete, and Toledo took its 35-17 lead into the fourth quarter.
CMU's defense held following the failed fourth down conversion, however, and Vince Agnew blocked a UT punt that Lorenzo White recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Harman's point-after made it 35-24 with 13:02 remaining.
Toledo answered less than three minutes later. Page took a lateral from Owens on the right side of the field, then threw back across the width of the field to Owens, who broke a tackle on his way to a 28-yard touchdown.
Tipton scored on a 2-yard run with 7:23 remaining that again cut the deficit to 11 points, 42-31, and Kyle Zelinsky blocked a Toledo punt on the ensuing possession that White fell on at the UT 15-yard line. Radcliff was sacked and stripped of the ball on the first snap following the block, and the Rockets converted a third down and a fourth down to erase the final 5:43 off the clock.
Radcliff finished 28-of-39 through the air for 322 yards. Cody Wilson caught 10 passes for 109 yards, while Kito Poblah made six catches for 77 yards.
Owens was 24-of-32 for 304 yards and three touchdowns for the Rockets. Page finished with 12 receptions for 127 yards, while Adonis Thomas rushed for 73 yards on 19 carries.
Toledo improved to 8-4 overall, 7-1 in the Mid-American Conference with the win. CMU closes its season 3-9 overall, 2-6 in the MAC.
