ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A six-run third broke an early 1-1 tie as Central Michigan fell to the University of Michigan, 13-7, at the Wilpon Complex on Wednesday.
A sacrifice fly by the Chippewas' (15-11) designated hitter Brendan Emmett tied the game at one in the top of the third, but the Wolverines (16-10) put together four two-out runs to blow the game open and take a 7-1 lead.
Each team added two runs in the fourth and CMU answered two U of M runs in the fifth with two of its own in the sixth, but the Maze and Blue would tack on two more runs in the seventh. The Maroon and Gold would rally for two runs in the ninth, but fell short of erasing the early deficit.
CMU's Bryce Morrow took the loss, getting touched up for nine runs (eight earned) on 14 hits over 3 1/3 innings. Mike Nixon and Brock Guetzke followed him in relief.
"Bryce's ball got up the second and third time through the order," head coach Steve Jaksa said. "He was aggressive and had good velocity, but he made some mistakes and they were able to get some hits the second or third time around."
Michigan's Matt Gerbe (1-0) picked up the win, giving up three runs (zero earned) on four hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings. Five relievers followed him to the hill.
Billy Anderson had four of Central Michigan's 10 hits, all singles, and reached base five times. Matt Faiman drove in two with a 1-for-4 effort.
CMU returns to Theunissen Stadium to host Mid-American Conference foe Akron in a three-game set, starting on Friday.
