MOUNT PLEASANT — The Mid-American Conference Central Michigan soccer team announced its schedule for the 2010 season on Monday.
The Chippewas play nine home contests, including their first four this fall.
The slate begins with home exhibitions against in-state foes Michigan (Aug. 13) and Michigan State (Aug. 15).
In addition to the exhibition contests, Central plays seven nonconference matches. The Maroon and Gold host Wright State (Aug. 20) and IPFW (Aug. 22) and travel to Northern Iowa (Aug. 27), Iowa (Aug. 29), NCAA Tournament participant West Virginia (Sept. 4), Detroit (Sept. 17) and Indiana (Sept. 19).
“Our nonconference schedule is the most difficult that we have played in my time at CMU,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “It will challenge our players both mentally and physically in the early part of the year, which I believe will help us as the season progresses."
Five of Central's 11 MAC contests will be played at the CMU Soccer Complex. The slate includes Akron (Sept. 24), Ohio (Sept. 26), Western Michigan (Oct. 15), Northern Illinois (Oct. 17) and Eastern Michigan (Oct. 28).
The top eight teams in the final league standings qualify for the MAC Tournament. The top four seeds host quarterfinal matches on Oct. 31. The highest remaining seed will host the semifinals (Nov. 5) and finals (Nov. 7).
The Chippewas return 13 letterwinners and 10 starters from the record-setting 2009 squad that went 17-4-3 overall and 9-0-2 in the MAC, the first unbeaten conference record in MAC history. The 2009 squad’s 19 shutouts tied for the most in the country.
