Chippewas Move into Three-Way Tie Atop MAC

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Jesse Hernandez carried a no-hitter into the fifth and finished off his first complete-game shutout of the season to help the Central Michigan baseball team pick up a 6-0 victory over Eastern Michigan to move into a three-way tie for first place atop the Mid-American Conference.
The Chippewas (31-20, 18-7 MAC) took the lead on an RBI single by Dale Cornstubble in the first inning and tacked on three in the third and two in the seventh while Hernandez dispatched the Eagles (25-28, 13-12 MAC) on just 99 pitches.
Cornstubble finished the day 4-for-5 with two RBI and Scott Phillion added a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI as CMU pounded out 14 hits. Matt Faiman also added three hits and Nate Theunissen smacked a pair of singles.
Hernandez (8-2) tossed his third complete game of the season, allowing just six hits and a walk while striking out five. He faced just three over the minimum.
Kendall Lewis (6-4) took the loss for EMU, giving up four runs on 11 hits and six walks.
The Chippewas are now in a three-way tie atop the conference and West Division after Toledo defeated Ball State in walk-off fashion to knot up all three teams at 18-7 in MAC play.
CMU and EMU will square off in game two of the three-game set on Friday at 3 p.m.
