MOUNT PLEASANT – The Central Michigan wrestling program will make five appearances at the new CMU Events Center during the 2010-11 season, head coach Tom Borrelli announced today.
The Chippewas will spend the season’s first 10 weeks on the road before making their home debut on Sunday, Jan. 16 against Michigan. CMU also will host Old Dominion in nonconference action, then closes the dual meet season with three home matches in seven days.
“The Michigan dual is going to be a great way to kick off wrestling in the new events center,” Borrelli said. “We will have a great atmosphere for that match, and I know our guys are looking forward to competing in the new facility.
“The thing that is going to be a huge plus for us is the proximity of our wrestling room to our competition mat. During dual meets our guys will be able to warm up in the wrestling room and then run from the wrestling room, where they’re comfortable, right into the arena to wrestle a match. That is a perfect situation that not many other programs in the country have.”
Also highlighting the Chippewas’ schedule are a dual at 2010 national runner-up Cornell and appearances at the Body Bar Invitational and Cliff Keen Invitational. CMU is competing at the Body Bar Invitational for the first time and is making its first appearance at the Cliff Keen Invitational since 1991.
“The Body Bar is a very competitive event,” Borrelli said. “We’re going to wrestle Cornell, who will be ranked No. 1 in the country, in our first dual meet of the year, and then we will be in their tournament the next day.
“We don’t want to be stale and wrestle the same people every year and do the same things every year. We want to change things up a little bit and see different times in different venues.”
CMU opens the dual meet season Nov. 19 at Cornell. The Chippewas will then compete in the Body Bar Invitational at Cornell the following day. Duals against Minnesota, North Dakota State and Appalachian State in Rochester, Minn. on Nov. 27 close the season’s first month.
The month of December includes appearances at the Cliff Keen Invitational and Midlands Championships sandwiched around a dual at Lehigh.
Mid-American Conference competition begins Jan. 6 with a dual at Northern Illinois. Two days later the Chippewas begin competition at National Duals. The remainder of the month of January includes the home opener against Michigan, a road trip to Michigan State and the nonconference finale against Old Dominion.
CMU visits Ohio on Feb. 4, then closes the dual season with home matches against Buffalo (Feb. 13), Eastern Michigan (Feb. 17) and Kent State (Feb. 20).
Northern Illinois will host the 2011 MAC Championships March 5-6, while the NCAA Championships are slated for March 17-19 in Philadelphia.
