Chippewas Shut Down Raiders in Season Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT — Chelsi Abbott scored in the 58th minute and the Central Michigan defense did the rest in a 1-0 season opening win over Wright State at the CMU Soccer Complex on Friday.
The Chippewas (1-0-0) won their season-opener for the fifth-consecutive year in front of a program-record 1,062 fans.
After trading shots in the first 10 minutes, CMU established its stout defense and held WSU to only two shots in a scoreless opening frame.
The Maroon and Gold flexed their muscles at the start of the second half and nearly got on the board in the 49th minute when Kaely Schlosser fired a shot off the post and Nicole Samuel blasted the rebound high, one of Samuel’s match-high eight shots.
CMU got on the board when Schlosser played a long through ball up the middle that freed Abbott behind the defense. After winning a foot race to the ball, the junior forward worked around Wright State keeper Brooke McCurdy and put the ball into a wide open net from just inside the box.
Abbott’s tally was all the offense the Chippewas needed as their defense bore down and did not allow a single shot on goal in the second half.
“We had several chances with different forwards getting behind the defense,” head coach Tom Anagnost said. “Kaely made a great play on the pass and Chelsi was very composed with the keeper out of the net.”
Central dominated Wright State statistically, holding a 17-5 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Shay Mannino and Stefanie Turner split time in goal for CMU with Mannino making one save in the first half and Turner earning her second-career victory with a scoreless second half.
The Chippewas return to the pitch on Sunday when they host IPFW. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
