No. 7 Spartans Edge Past Chippewas

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Central Michigan field hockey team stood toe-to-toe with No. 7 Michigan State in its season-opener, but a pair of late MSU goals sent CMU to a 4-2 loss at the Champions Invitational on Saturday.
The Chippewas (0-1) will play No. 13 Louisville on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
Michigan State’s Joelle van Ierland opened the scoring in the sixth minute by firing a pass in front of the goal to make it 1-0.
CMU answered back with a goal of its own in the 18th minute when Brooke Sihota got her stick on a rebound and fired it into the corner of the net to tie the contest at one apiece.
The match remained tied late in the frame until MSU’s Angela Pagura gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
The Maroon and Gold rallied in the second half as Sihota tallied her second goal of the day off a penalty corner with 14:38 remaining to even the score at 2-2.
Michigan State regained the lead 42 seconds later as Sabine van den Assem put a shot into the right corner of the net to put the Spartans up for good.
Van den Assem capped the scoring with her second goal with 7:59 remaining to put the contest away.
Michigan State outshot Central, 29-8, and also held a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.
Carissa Flocken made her collegiate debut in goal for CMU. The freshman stopped eight of the 12 shots she faced.
