Bloomington, Ind. — A tough first half deemed costly for the CMU women's soccer team on Sunday, as it dropped a 2-1 match at Indiana.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stefanie Turner earned her second straight start in goal for the Chippewas and faced an array of shots from the start.
Indiana scored the first goal of the game when Carly Samp fired a shot from 16 yards in the 11th minute and the ball deflected off a Central Michigan defender to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
CMU was able to fire just one shot during the first half, with Turner stopping five of the six shots she faced to keep the score 1-0 at the half.
The second half of the match played more evenly between the two teams, as CMU was able to fire seven shots, three on goal, adding pressure to the Indiana defense.
Indiana's Orianica Velasquez scored the second goal of the match from inside the 18-yard box to extend the Hoosiers' lead to 2-0.
The Maroon and Gold added a score late in the match when freshman Jennifer Gassman scored her first career goal in the 87th minute to close the gap to 2-1, but the Chippewas were unable to pose another scoring threat.
"We knew we were going to play a good team today," head coach Tom Anagnost said. "We came out with a better mindset in the second half. We need to play that way all the time."
Turner took the loss in net for CMU, dropping her record to 2-2 on the season. Turner played all 90 minutes for the first time in her career, stopping seven of the nine shots she faced.
CMU will return home after a month on the road to open Mid-American Conference play versus Akron Friday at 4 p.m., before facing off against Ohio on Sunday at 2 p.m.
