MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan held on to a late lead to defeat Bowling Green, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the CMU Soccer Complex, extending its home unbeaten streak to 31 consecutive matches.
A goal by sophomore forward Jennifer Gassman in the 70th minute gave the Chippewas (10-1-3, 4-0-2 MAC) a 2-0 lead that ended up being the difference, as the Falcons (5-10, 2-4 MAC) answered just three minutes later with their only goal of the unseasonably warm afternoon, with temperatures in the 80s.
The Chippewas last loss at home was Oct. 19, 2008, against Toledo.
Junior defender Bailey Brandon took a CMU throw in on the far side of the field just upfield from the box and tossed it into the box for Gassman, who fired a shot from the middle of the box into the top right corner of the net for her third of the season.
The goal by Bowling Green came just moments later on a goal from Kenzie Schlemitz off a CMU turnover near the box that was chipped in to Schlemitz before it could be cleared.
Despite allowing the goal late, the Chippewas turned in another solid defensive performance to preserve the unbeaten streak, allowing just four shots on goal in nine total shots and surrendering just one corner kick. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Grace Labrecque saved three shots and allowed her first career goal, including a diving save on a first-half shot that was fired from well outside the box toward the far corner of the goal.
" Today we came out and I thought we gave a solid performance," head coach Neil Stafford said. "Our back line was fantastic. They held the fort down. Doing it offensively and defensively, our back four were fantastic today."
Central Michigan's offense created plenty of scoring opportunities, with six shots on goal and 26 total shots, including a cross by Gassman in the first half that ricocheted off the post and nearly bounced past the line. The Chippewas earned eight corner kicks on the afternoon, seven more than the Falcons.
Brandon converted one of those opportunities in the 17th minute of the first half with a header off a corner by senior midfielder Claire Horton that blew past the Bowling Green goalkeeper to give the Chippewas a 1-0 lead.
The goal allowed by the Chippewas was the first in 589 minutes and 53 seconds of game time, snapping a shutout streak of five consecutive games, and the first allowed against a MAC opponent this season. The previous goal allowed dates back all the way to the 2-1 win at Wisconsin Sept. 14.
The Chippewas travel to Western Michigan to take on the Broncos Friday at 4 p.m. The next home date for the Chippewas is Oct. 21 against Toledo.
