MUNCIE, Ind. -- The bottom four members of the Ball State batting order keyed an 8-1 victory over Central Michigan to avoid a sweep in the Mid-American Conference series at Ball Diamond on Sunday.
The Cardinals (12-25, 8-6 MAC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead thanks to one in the second, five in the fourth and two in the fifth as Morgan Coombs stymied the Chippewas (20-20, 9-6 MAC) with eight strong innings.
The Cardinals 6-7-8-9 hitters combined to go 11-for-19 with six RBI and six runs scored, led by Tim Issler's 5-for-5 day with three runs scored. Kevin Franchetti also hit his first home run of the season, going 2-for-5 with three RBI.
CMU's Jake Sabol (3-3) was touched up for six runs on 10 hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss, while Coombs (4-3) went eight innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk. He struck out six.
The Maroon and Gold offense managed just five hits, the only extra-base hit coming on a triple by Matt Faiman . Singles by Jordan Adams , Sam Russell , Rod Helsen and Nate Theunissen made up the remainder of the offensive effort.
CMU returns home to face Bowling Green on April 26, in a makeup date from a snowout earlier this season. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
