Recent improvements include an upgraded playing surface (Hilltopper Stabilizer), permanent chair back seating, a new backstop, and cosmetic improvements to the outfield fence and the Fran Koenig Press Box. Padding and aesthetic improvements were also made to both dugouts.
The stadium, named for current and longtime head coach Margo Jonker, was dedicated on April 19, 2008. Jonker owns over 1,000 victories and has guided CMU to 11 Mid-American Conference titles and 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament. The 1987 National Coach of the Year and nine-time MAC Coach of the Year is a member of several Halls of Fame, including the prestigious National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She was an assistant coach on USA Softball’s 2000 gold medal-winning Olympic team.
Over $250,000 has been raised as part of the renovation project, which includes permanent stadium seating (completed), lights, a permanent locker room and batting cages.
The stadium, which sits just southwest of Rose Center and the CMU Events Center, also features a full scoreboard, enclosed dugouts for both the Chippewas and the visitors, and a team meeting room. The facility affords fantastic sight lines for up to 1,500 spectators, including 135 chairback seats positioned directly behind home plate. |
