MOUNT PLEASANT — The Central Michigan soccer program announced its 2011 schedule on Thursday, as it seeks its third-straight Mid-American Conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
The Chippewas, who return 21 players from their 2010 championship squad, open exhibition play at NCAA qualifier West Virginia (8/13) before opening the regular season at the CMU Soccer Complex versus Detroit (8/19).
CMU's regular season will open with a four-game road trip, as it will take on Evansville (8/26) and Indiana State (8/28) for the first times in program history, SEC foe Kentucky (9/2) and the Big East's Louisville (9/4).
A return home will welcome Pittsburgh on Sept. 9 as CMU will look to continue its unbeaten streak at the CMU Soccer Complex, which currently sits at 22 games.
Two Big Ten opponents and 2010 NCAA qualifiers will welcome the Chippewas to kick off another four-game road trip, as they will visit Michigan (9/11) and Wisconsin (9/14). The Chippewas defeated the Badgers 2-0 during a spring exhibition, while playing to a 0-0 draw at U of M.
The road for a third-straight MAC regular season championship will begin at Akron (9/23) and Ohio (9/25), before the Chippewas return to Mount Pleasant for a four-game homestand versus Buffalo (9/30), Kent State (10/2), Miami (10/7) and Bowling Green (10/9).
The Chippewas will welcome the 2010 MAC regular season co-champion Toledo Rockets on Oct. 21 and Ball State on Oct. 23 to close their home schedule and will wrap up the regular season at in-state foe Eastern Michigan (10/27).
The 2011 season will be the first under head coach Neil Stafford, who spent the previous two seasons as the program's top assistant and was named the fourth head coach in program history on Jan. 10, 2011.
