MOUNT PLEASANT — Senior Liesel Toth has earned a pair of accolades, being named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week and to the TopDrawerSoccer.com College Team of the Week.
Toth (Victor N.Y./Victor HS) led the Chippewas to a dramatic 2-1 win over Wisconsin by tallying three points in the team's only contest last week. The senior put the Maroon and Gold in front just 7:59 into the contest with her first goal of the season on a free kick from 30 yards that made its way past a Badger wall and into the top right corner of the net. After Wisconsin tied the game in the second half, Toth took advantage of another free kick, setting up just on the inside of midfield. Toth found senior Chelsi Abbott inside the 18-yard box, and Abbott chipped a shot over the UW keeper for the game-winning score with just 1:02 remaining. The win improved CMU to 6-1-1 and knocked off the Badgers, who received 19 votes in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and were ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region.
The senior defender extended her consecutive starts streak to 74 matches versus Wisconsin and played the match's entirety for the seventh time in eight games this season.
The Chippewas are off to their best start since 2006 when they started 7-0 and kick off their quest for a third-straight MAC title this weekend on the road at Akron and Ohio.
