The Chippewas, who will play seven home games for just the third time in the modern era, will play nine of their 12 regular season games on Saturday and will host a string of four straight home games beginning in October.
CMU opens the season with three straight nonconference games: home matchups with Southeast Missouri State (Aug. 30) and Michigan State (Sept. 8) followed by a road trip to Iowa (Sept. 22).
The Maroon and Gold defeated Southeast Missouri State, 44-27, in the 2004 home opener, the only other previous meeting between the programs. Southeast Missouri State was 3-8 overall in 2011, one season after the Redhawks were 9-3, won the Ohio Valley Conference and advanced to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs.
The Chippewas are 3-5 all-time against Michigan State, but this season's contest will mark Michigan State's first trip to Kelly/Shorts Stadium and just the second time CMU has hosted a Big Ten Conference opponent; the Chippewas opened the 2005 season at home against Indiana. Michigan State was 11-3 overall in 2011, winning the Big Ten Legends Division and defeating Georgia, 33-30, in the Outback Bowl. The Spartans were ranked No. 10 in the final USA Today coaches' poll and No. 11 in the final Associated Press poll.
A nonconference matchup with Navy on Friday, Oct. 12 is the first of four consecutive home games at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The game will be televised nationally in primetime on ESPN2. Navy becomes the second service academy to visit Kelly/Shorts Stadium, following Army's trip to Mount Pleasant in 2007. CMU is 0-2 all-time against Navy, including a 38-37 defeat in Annapolis in 2010. The Midshipmen were 5-7 overall in 2011, snapping a streak of eight consecutive seasons in a bowl game.
The Chippewas also host Ball State (Oct. 20), Akron (Oct. 27) and Western Michigan (Nov. 3) during their longest homestand since 1968.
CMU closes the season by playing two of its final three games on the road. The Chippewas wrap visits to Eastern Michigan (Nov. 10) and Massachusetts (Nov. 23) around the home finale with Miami (Nov. 17) to close the regular season.
Kickoff times, special event dates (including Homecoming) and additional television appearances will be announced at a later date.
