MOUNT PLEASANT - The Maroon squad took a commanding 3-0 lead in the seven-game Fall World Series Sunday afternoon, completing a weekend sweep of the Gold team, 6-4.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the Maroon offense went to work by sending eight batters to the plate en route to scoring three runs on just two hits.
Sophomore Pat MacKenzie led off with a walk, stole second and third and finally scored on a passed ball to tie the game, 1-1. After consecutive singles by freshman Zack Fields and Morgan Oliver, freshman Dylan Goodwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A walk to sophomore Joe Houlihan gave the Maroon the lead, 2-1, before redshirt freshman Trevor Karbowski extended the lead to 3-1 with an RBI ground out that plated Oliver.
The offense continued for the Maroon in the next inning as they took advantage of Gold miscues to paid their lead to 5-1. Freshman Logan Regnier walked and scored on a Gold error, while senior Tom Lally singled to left center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fields.
After freshman Tyler Frank scored on a wild pitch allowed the Maroon to extend their lead even further in the top of the eighth, the Gold squad mounted a comeback.
Junior Noel Santos singled to lead off the inning and moved to third when junior Cody Leichman singled to center field in the next at bat. A ground out by senior Jordan Adams allowed Santos to score from third and back-to-back wild pitches by freshman Jason Gamble allowed Leichman to pull the Gold within 6-3.
Sophomore Tyler Huntey then walked and redshirt freshman Ryan Heeke singled to right field where an error on Randon Henika allowed Huntey to score, pulling the Gold within two, 6-4.
After a 1-2-3 inning by freshman Matt Constance held the Maroon in the top of the ninth, the Gold threatened by putting the tying run on base when Leichman singled to left field, but Gamble forced Adams into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Frank led the Maroon by going 3-for-5 with a run scored, while MacKenzie burned the base paths for the second-straight day by swiping three bags. Leichman also went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the gold.
The series will continue Wednesday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium with first pitch set for 2:45 p.m.
