Field Hockey Earns Fourth-Highest GPA in Division I

MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan field hockey program earned its third-straight Division I Academic Team Award Monday, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced.
The Chippewas posted the fourth-highest grade point average among Division I programs with a 3.47 mark, ranking just behind American University (3.55), Saint Francis University (3.53) and Monmouth University (3.48).
This marks the second-straight year that the program has posted the highest GPA among public universities, as their 3.48 mark a year ago also finished fourth in the country and first among public schools.
"Our team is excited to receive this award again and to be consistently ranked in the top five nationally for Division I field hockey programs," head coach Cristy Freese said. "Our goal is to be a nationally recognized program every year and our players do a tremendous job dedicating themselves to their academics. Our players are in a variety of majors as they balance their academic goals with the demands of Division I field hockey. This is a great recognition for our teams as well as Central Michigan University and the faculty that work with our student-athletes every day."
In all, 60 programs were honored with the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I Team Academic Award for compiling a GPA of 3.0 of higher during the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.
The Chippewas have won the award four times in the last five years, grabbing the accolade in 2007-08, 2009-10 and 2010-11.
